Kinja'd!!!

Lately I noticed some vibration coming from the rear when I was at highway speeds over 110km/h.

In the past, that was usually due to crap getting stuck inside the wheel. And since I’m going on a road trip this weekend, I figured I’ll quickly pull off, inspect and clean the insides of my wheels... and then I discovered what you see in the picture above. And what looks like little hairs on the side... yeah those are broken steel belts sticking out of the tire.

Gonna be buying two new tires tomorrow.

Just put it on the car with that part pointing up so the wear can even out. This is why you’re supposed to rotate the tires now and then!

That's quite the flat spot too. Little slidearoo?

I suspect it was caused by either the broken belts, the rear tire on the other side that was patched or a combo of both factors.

I installed new shocks last year along with new swaybar end links.  I suspect the culprit is the tire on the other side that was patched and/or the broken belts.

I typically rotate the tires twice a year.  I suspect this was a combo of factors... warm weather, broken belts and the tire on the other side that was patched (where after the patch, it would give a slight nudge to one side as the patched part made contact with the road).

Looks like the wheel locked and got dragged. Even the uneven wear is uneven, even.

If you look closely, you’ll notice the tire is bulging a bit on the side it’s worn smooth.   It’s really obvious in person, not so much in the picture.

dang - looks like a typical flat spot until you see all the broken cords/belts. Maybe just a junk tire and the wear is from the the tread starting to separate after all the cords broke?

When you get the new tires put on make sure they balance them. Some scummy shops will "fo rget" but still charge you for it.

The brand of tire is Nordman... basically Nokian’s budget brand, which is still more expensive than a lot of crap sold by other brands.

I’ve had good experiences with Nokian in the past.  And this was a recent thing after putting on about 60,000km over 2.5 years.

Aren’t you supposed to swap out the winter rubber in the warmer weather?  I imagine the warmer temps had a lot to do with the tire coming apart.

It’s actually a 4 season tire.
